D r a m a ( April 1st )

We are very shocked and saddened to report that a rogue killer whale has decimated our squadron of dorados this morning. We heard a tremendous thrashing about in the water on the starboard side of the raft just after 9.00 am, and all rushed out to see the scene of desolation. Andy luckily managed to capture the culprit on film doing a victory roll after the dastardly deed, and we will be sending a copy of this for the website. Our dorados have travelled with us for hundreds of miles and we are all distraught that our faithful companions have been slaughtered in this manner. It is just as well that Anthony wasn’t taking a shower at the time or we could have lost him too. If the killer had got him, we can just imagine, however, that his last words would bravely have been ” it will make a wonderful chapter for the boooo……..”

We have consulted our reference books on board and realise that killer whales are not common in the mid Atlantic, particularly at the very beginning of April, thus our reference to the whale being a ‘rogue’. He must have been on his migratory path south to’ pick up a penguin’ or two in the South Atlantic, and just happened to strike it lucky with our little friends. May they rest in pieces.

Sad that the fish which had followed you on your journey ended up the way they did. Some may have scattered to escape the attack and once again reform under the raft. One consolation you got to see some more wildlife and a good photo to boot “for possible inclusion in Anthony’s book” . I wonder what the feelings of the the two brave swimmers from the raft a few weeks ago would have been, if they had seen the killer whale surface along side of them.
    Safe journey.

Fantastic Pic – Nature at its best – cant wait to se the video clip.

  3. No flying whales rounding balloons! Helicopters only. Some carrying weapons. For
shooting down foreign aeronauts. Happened over White Russia (Belrus) during a Gordon
Bennett race starting from WiIL Switzerland.
    Happy landing,
    Erwin !

  4. Thank you and keep praying to thr ghosts of the seas!

Wonderful picture! Keep up the good progress you brave rafters. ROB

How sad that your dear dorados didn’t get to complete the journey with you but what a privelege to witness such a spectacle, and what a noble end they had. When you consider how far this boy (or girl) has travelled in his lifetime it brings home just how dreadful is the fate of Tillikum and all the other captive Orcas.

  9. Jim & Bev Kilpatrick says:

Oh, my..How sad but what a sighting. How few people have experienced this. Glad it was not the crew that was devoured. See you are almost to the islands…what adventurers!

  10. Terribly sad about the Dorados, but what a great pic. Stick by raft rules in the future. Best wishes. Ted

  11. Barbara says:

Well I must confess that I took this as some black (and white?) humour for April Fool’s Day. Am I right?

  12. Richard says:

A fishy story if ever I heard one …………… seen any penguins lately?

  13. Jackie says:

Must be an April Fool – if he was looking for a penguin or two you could just have thrown him a few bits of chocolate – I am sure he would not have missed the biscuit!!!

  14. christine edgeworth says:

Is this a wind up? It must be otherwise the whale would have come back for seconds – don’t tempt fate – you are so near now!

    Best wishes Christine
