Ancient Mariner

Today is a red letter day in the voyage of Antiki as our Captain Anthony Smith turns 85. We wonder how many people have had their 85th birthday on a raft somewhere in the Atlantic. So far we can’t think of any others! It is a pretty amazing achievement in the crew’s eyes and after we had all sung Happy Birthday to him we did indeed congratulate him on this project, one of many in an exciting list of adventures.
Today we will celebrate with much chocolate and Andy is making a “cake” as I write this. The word cake is in inverted commas as we have no eggs left so are improvising a bit…!
Our speed is down a bit as the wind has died and we are now only making 1.5 knots or thereabouts. That’s sailing! The sky is blue and the seas are slight so we shall just enjoy the day, a special one indeed.
David and the crew.

I hope the crew manage to send a picture of the birthday boy on his birthday aboard AnTiki.
But meanwhile, here are a few pictures I’ve taken of Anthony……..

No eggs? Use mayonnaise if you have some. It’s just egg and oil. Happy birthday Anthony!

Congratulations Antony on your 85th birthday. I hope I’m as active as you when I reach mine in 10 years (& one weeks) time. I have been following your progress with great interest and look forward to each new blog from An-tiki.
Best wishes to you all and ‘Happy landings’

Happy Birthday Sailor !!.. another day to remember for you and a very special moment during your great voyage together with your super An-Tiki crew. I’am wondering a bit about that cake but I understand somebody saved some chocolate for you so thats great. By the way, St-Maarten is a beautiful little island. All the best, with love from Holland.

  5. Happy Birthday, Anthony!
We’ll be knocking back the grog in your honour tonight.

Dear Anthony, Congratulations! What a glorious way to spend it. I spent my 65th working on the Lord Nelson in las Palmas, but sadly after you had all left, otherwise I would have found a way to get down there, as I tried to investigate. I am certain we met many years ago at my brother Robin Porteous and his wife Penny’s house in Kingston, and I understand that her brother Andrew Godber visited you in La Gomera – they quoted it for the whistling on Radio 4 yesterday – the day before actually, as its now 1am! We met at Southwark Playhouse last year or the year before as well. I am Ali Porteous’s older sister and she told me about An-Tiki

A leaflet dropped through my letterbox so I signed up a Standing Order for Water Aid as it is one of the greatest and most vital of charities. How are your studies of plankton getting on?

Very best wishes, and once again, congratulations!

    Chimpy (Porteous)

  9. Congratulations Anthony. As your journey approaches it’s climax I’m sure it’s success will be the icing on your lifes cake. I’ve never known where my brother has been for such a long time, thanks for looking after him….Ted
