Interesting comment on Roseate Terns. Peter Harrisons book – Seabirds – indicates that the range of Roseates, Common, Arctic and Sandwich Terns overlaps and that care needs to be taken with ID. In the range maps of both Harrison and ” A field Guide to the Seabirds of Britain and the World -” by tuck and Heinzel neither have the migratory range of Roseates in the mid atlantic – however out of the species listed above only the Common Tern has a migratory range that covers the North Atlantic. All the other species have their breeding, non breeding and migratory routes close to the coasts of Africa and Eastern USA down to the venezuelan coast including the Caribbean. Roseates are one of my favourite Terns and are on the endangered species list. They visit the Caribbean in the Summer months to breed and are a beautiful sight when feeding in groups as they are so delicate and almost fiary like in their Jizz. And just a reminder to David – there is a bet on to who arrives first in the Caribbean – Antiki or the Laughing Gulls – the latter will be in the BVI on April 1 – not much time boys!!!!
